To start off Excel was never created for WINDOWS User. Yes that is correct, it was actually created for MAC users. In fact for the first three years of its existence, EXCEL was all exclusive for MAC users. Though there are many versions of stories, yet no one exactly knows the reason for this act.

You heard it correct. The Software was launched under the name, "Multiplan", in the year 1982. Upon its launch, the Software was questioned for its ability to handle Math operations and precision data, which at that time were handled by advanced calculating machines. In fact, MULTIPLAN was considered a failure for the mere fact that prior to 1980, the idea of DATA Analysis were literally non existant.

Doug Klunder, Bill Gates , Charles Simonyi

Klunder is the brain behind the Excel that we see today. However Bill Gates and Simonyi have contributed towards Excel's design and GUI.
The Actual lauch of EXCEL was in 1987 on a Windows OS. During that time, the development team of Excel were all housed in a single building.
Today, Microsoft Excel occupies dozens of storey building on the very campus it was originally started.
Simonyi together with Bill, went on to become Billionaires, while Klunder remains as simple as he was when he initiated Excel development originally.
When asked, was he happy with the design implementation of EXCEL, Bill Gates replied that he never got to implement completely the design he had in mind.
For he had forgotten the original design and was only able to implement a mere 60% of the original idea.
